Conditions for all service animals
- Available services: Service dog, Rescue dog, Guide dog, Emotional support dog
- Only dogs are accepted
- Free transportation in the cabin
- Free transport at the passenger’s feet
- Maximum number of animals: 1 emotional support animal, and 3 guide or service animals.
- Minimum age: 4 months
- The passenger must arrive 3 hours in advance.
- The passenger cannot reserve a seat next to an emergency exit.
- Accepted flights: TACA Internacional, Avianca Costa Rica, Avianca Perú, Avianca and Avianca Ecuador S.A.
- Code share flights: The service does not apply.
- Flight from Bogota to London: Service not available
- The animal is placed at the passenger’s feet, or on its legs (if the size of the animal does not exceed that of a small child capable of traveling on the legs of a passenger)
- The animal does not sit on a seat.
- The dog must behave well, examples:He does not jump on people and does not bite.
- He remains at the feet of its owner
- He doesn’t run around the airport, or the plane
- The ticket cannot be refunded if the animal shows violent behavior, or does not meet the sanitary conditions or does not have veterinary documentation.
- Government restrictions may apply for dangerous dogs
- Flight of 8 hours and more: The passenger must have a document attesting that the dog will not do his needs on board the plane or that he will do his needs so as not to create a health problem during the flight.
- If the hygiene or health conditions of the animal are a danger to the health and safety of the flight, boarding may be refused
- No size limit, the animal must however be able to be in its place without obstructing the evacuations. If this is not possible, options will be offered:Free transport in the hold
- Purchase of additional seat (the dog travels on the ground)
- Reassignment on another flight
Specific Conditions: Service animal
- A harness is required for the animal.
- These animals are not required to wear a muzzle.
- The passenger has written documentation to confirm that the animal is a service animal, and to show the breed of the animal.
- The passenger has an identity document, any other written document, labels, harness, verbal confirmation
- The dog has an identification card or label.
- The passenger verbally confirms that the passenger uses the dog as a service dog, and that the dog behaves as such.
- Colombia: Dogs of dangerous breeds: Certificate via a document issued by a doctor that due to a disability condition, the dog must travel.
- Search and rescue dogs (K, B and R): Must have: Bib, microchip, certificate, collar and double leash
Specific Conditions: Emotional or psychiatric support dog
- The passenger must arrive at least 1 hour before the check-in time recommended at check-in
- A muzzle may be required for emotional support dogs if the animal is aggressive.
- Evidence of the animal
- A letter headed and dated less than one year by a licensed mental health professional must be provided stating:
- the passenger suffers from a recognized mental or emotional impairment;
- the passenger needs his dog as an emotional or psychiatric support animal during the journey or once arrived at destination;
- the licensed mental health professional who prepared the document;
- the fact that the passenger is currently being followed by the licensed mental health professional who prepared the document;
- information on the mental health professional’s license to practice;
- the date, the type of license issued by the doctor or mental health professional and the place where the license was issued;
- medical prescription saying that for the treatment the animal must accompany his patient for his mental or emotional state during the flight on board the plane.
Health conditions
- The passenger must present a photocopy of the animal’s vaccination card
- The passenger has a health inspection certificate made by a veterinarian indicating his professional registration number
- Minimum age: 4 months (this may be higher for some countries)
- Passenger must learn about import and export rules and documents
- The passenger must have all the documents necessary for the journey of the animal (import permit …)
- Connecting flights:
- Animals up to 20 KILOS: Each flight is a maximum of 4 hours
- Animals up to 10 KILOS: Each flight is a maximum of 5 hours
- If one of the planes is not an Airbus A330 or Boeing B787: Restriction kept to the above restrictions
