What animals are allowed?
It is possible to travel to Sweden with a bird. Indeed, birds are allowed in a maximum of 5 animals per trip as part of a non-commercial trip under certain conditions that we will explore. Please note, however, that certain species, i.e. poultry and birds of prey, are not considered to be domestic animals and therefore cannot be transported for non-commercial travel.
What are the entry requirements?
- Transportation must be with the owner, or with another person with the owner’s written permission to travel with animals on behalf of the owner.
- The animal must not change owners or be sold.
- In case of CITES protection measures, it may not be possible to enter or a permit may be required.
- The animal is in good health.
- The person traveling with the animal is responsible for it, and to be careful to follow the rules. If that if not met, the traveler can be stopped at the border.
- The animal must have been born and have grown in captivity.
- Customs restrictions may apply.

- The bird must come from an OIE member country and be authorized.
- The person traveling with the animal is responsible for it, and to be careful to follow the rules. If that if not met, the traveler can be stopped at the border.
- The animal must have been born and have grown in captivity.
- Customs restrictions may apply.
- The quarantine conditions must be satisfied before importation:
- The animal was kept in solitary confinement under official supervision at least 30 days before departure to a country listed in part 1 of Annex I or Annex II or,
- The animal was kept in isolation at least 10 days before departure and was tested for the H5N1 antigen or the H5N1 genome (after the 3rd day of isolation) and this must show that the animal is not not carrying avian flu, the representative must sign a document attesting that the tests have been carried out, or,
- Birds must be transported to a household or other home and may participate in shows, fairs, exhibitions or other events involving birds no earlier than 30 days after their arrival.
- The animal was kept in isolation under official supervision at least 30 days after arrival in the European Union in an approved place (no place is available in Sweden, places are available in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece , Ireland, Malta, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Czech Republic)
- A veterinary examination must be carried out before importation.
- Entrance is possible via authorized posts: Stockholm-Arlanda, Gothenburg-Landvetter. The authorities must be notified at least 48 hours, and the border veterinarian at least 1 working day in advance.
- If in doubt during the veterinary inspection, additional examinations at the owner’s expense will be carried out.

- The costs are 400 SEK payable on the account specified on the site.
- Name and address must be indicated
- Copy of receipt and request should be sent to the Swedish Board of Agriculture
