What animals are allowed?
It is possible to travel to Spain with a bird. Indeed, the birds are authorized within the framework of a non-commercial voyage under certain conditions which we will explore. Please note, however, that certain species, i.e. poultry, are not considered to be domestic animals and therefore cannot be transported for non-commercial travel.
What documents are required?
Here are the documents necessary to travel to Spain with your bird:
- Birds must have an identification document completed by a veterinarian in the country of departure. It remains valid for 10 days, except in the case of transport by sea, or its validity will last the time of the sea voyage.
- Certain species under CITES protection are subject to export and import certificates.
- A health certificate drawn up at least in Spanish and issued within the previous 10 days, the veterinarian must certify that there is no sign of disease corresponding to Decision 2007/25 / EC
- A declaration from the owner or an authorized person, attesting that the transport has no commercial aim, that he undertakes not to sell the animals and to accept the checks that the Spanish veterinary services deem appropriate from the address or addresses indicated by the interested parties in accordance with the health regulations in force.
- If the pet is not traveling with the owner, the person traveling with the pet must have written permission to travel with the pet.
What are the entry requirements?
Traveling to Spain with a bird requires fulfilling a few conditions:
- The animal must be moved because the owner has to go to Spain.
- The displacement must take place maximum five days before or after the arrival of the owner.
- Transportation must be with the owner, or with another person with the owner’s written permission to travel with animals on behalf of the owner.
- The person accompanying the animal must be prepared for an inspection, and show the necessary documents.
- It is possible to enter via all border crossings.

- Invasive species regulations may be applied
- A declaration from the owner or an authorized person, attesting that the transport has no commercial aim, that he undertakes not to sell the animals and to accept the checks that the Spanish veterinary services deem appropriate from the address or addresses indicated by the interested parties in accordance with the health regulations in force.
- If the pet is not traveling with the owner, the person traveling with the pet must have written permission to travel with the pet.
- Animal health certificate at least in Spanish, signed by an official veterinarian from the third country. The animal must correspond to one of these characteristics:
- Before export: Isolated under official control for at least 30 days in the country of origin (only for countries included in part 1 of Annex I or part 1 of Annex II to Regulation (EU) 206/2010 of the Commission)
- After importation: In quarantine for a period of 30 days in authorized facilities. Valid if the owner proves that the animal is accepted by the quarantine center.
- During the last six months and at the latest 60 days before the trip: vaccinated at least once and again vaccinated against avian influenza.
- Isolated for 10 days before export, subjected to the H5N1 avian influenza genome or antigen test, carried out on a sample taken at the earliest on the third day of isolation.
